Scripture – Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Scripture – Luke 12:49-53
49 “I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! 51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. 52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. 53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

This Week’s Sermon Reflection:

  • How have I honored God by honoring my parents?
  • In what ways has obeying my parents been in tension with what God desires for my life?
  • Where do I need reconciliation and healing in my relationship with my parents?

Those of Asian-American descent have been taught repeatedly about the importance of filial piety so the idea of “honoring mother and father” may not be anything new to some of us. Yet, how do we resolve the tension of honoring our family and honoring God at the same time?

2 Corinthians

24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26 he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
